I loaned out the Rankin-Bass illustrated Hobbit to a couple of my younger relatives yesterday. I hope they will like it (they are into Harry Potter right now).

I am sure they will.
The magic of Tolkien was that he was able to write a story like the Hobbit that appeals to the very young and the old alike. I feel a bit cheated that I only discovered it at 16! I would have been great to read at about 8 or so |

It was. I then discovered the Lord of the Rings, and by eleven I had worn out the first copy and was reading the Silmarillion and the Return of the Shadow.

When I taught preschool, we used to read The Hobbit to the 4- and 5-year olds. They loved it!
